With the imminent outbreak of WWii the British government needed an emergency hideout and rural command post. The Wentworth Estate was deemed an appropriate location and work was started to build an underground bunker.
Two 25 foot diameter tunnels ran parallel to each other and were linked with smaller 12 foot diameter tunnels. The tunnels are lined with cast iron segments similar to what you see in the London Underground and the entire bunker was covered with a bomb proof slab.
This site controlled most of the allied ground forces of the invasion of western Europe, known as operation overlord.
A late night visit here after a healthy KFC where we messed around with torches and it got a bit misty inside due to my e-cig and lack of ventilation.
