This abandoned hospital in Welwyn Garden City was the first complete hospital built by the NHS. A rather large complex which contained 100 beds.
Opened in 1963 by the queen, quite appropriate as the hospital was named after her. The plaque you see in the images is actually the plaque she revelaed on that day.
QE II Scandals
A biomedical scientist was told he could take obsolete items for a project he was starting in Botswana. However he was found with up to £70,000 of equipment some of which was not obsolete.
In 2012 a doctor was sentenced to three years imprisonment for sexual abuse towards a patient in a cubicle. It could well of been worse had a nurse not walked in to almost catch him in the act.
A healthy active 76 year old lady never recovered from a hip replacement. Due to delays and cancellations she did not receive food or drink for a week before her operation. This left her too weak to recover from what is quite a standard procedure in this day and age.
Closure
From as early as 2007 plans were afoot to shut down this hospital and from 2013 equipment and services were beginning to be transfered to other sites. In the summer of 2015 a new hospital with the same name opened on the site and this one closed. The old hospital was scheduled for demolition to make way for new homes and a care centre. I would guess this project is well under way now.
