Well you can't go on your first ubex tour of Germany without visiting this abandoned hospital. Beelitz Heilstätten is like the holy grail in Germany for urban explorers. This was the main goal of our trip and it certainly didn't disapoint Behind Closed Doors, Proj3ct M4yhem or anyone else in the group.
The first construction was between 1898 and1902 to the designs of architects Heino Schmieden and Juluis Boethke. A further phase between 1908 and 1910 doubled the bed count from 600 to 1200 and a final phase between 1926 and 1930. The two later construction phases were to the designs of architect Fritz Schulz. Schulz had a slightly less extravagant approach to his predecessors but these buildings were still of as much interest.
Beelitz became a Military hospital in WWi and even treated Corporal Adolf Hitler for a leg wound in 1916.
After WWii the hospital was taken over by the Russian forces where they stayed until 1995. Hitler was not the only leader to be treated here. In December 1990 Erich Honecker was admitted with liver cancer after standing down from office.
The stunning architecture and decay draws different people from all over to the Beelitz Heilstätten site. From photographers like myself to large budget movie makers. The most recent being A Cure For Wellness. The Male Pavilion and the Bath House were redecorated specifically for this film.
As of now writing this 2019 the site has become a tourist attraction more buildings have been renovated and there is a walkway through the forest above some of the still abandoned buildings.
