The abandoned Krachstroom or The High Voltage Room is set in the heart of a run down industrial area of a Belgian city. I guess as the heavy industry declined so did the need for the localised power and the site was no longer needed. It is quite clear this has been abandoned for quite some time now.
Sitting right next to a substation with five or six large noisy transformers this room buzzes at quite some volume.
Even though this old abandoned power station is stripped there is something about it I really like and I was determined to get inside.
Access here is not easy at all if you look at the third image you can see down to what seems like the basement, well this is actually the ground floor and the only access is through the windows in the turbine hall. Looking at the scattered breeze blocks outside. I suggested to make some stairs. A bit of a hunt around we found a table add the breeze blocks to this and you still can't reach the windows. You can just reach some exposed rebar though and this helps you get up enough to finally reach the window.
Was it worth the effort? Yes it was and it was a fine end to my first day in Belgium of 2015.
