The steel shop houses the converter section and continuous casting.
The liquid metal needs treating before making it into steel, first it will be desulphurised and the slag (scrap from the process and the blast furnace) will be removed. The molten metal is then mixed with scrap to make steel. Then pure oxygen is blown into the liquid hot metal bath. This removes carbon and other chemical impurities. Nitrogen or argon are injected via the bottom of the converter to optimise the refining process. More slag is created during this process and is removed before being transfered to the casting process.
The casting process is much simpler hot metal goes in hot metal comes out in huge slabs.
I’m afraid I can’t fully describe the process in the images as it slightly baffles me as to what everything does.
I’m afraid this is where the journey ends at this site, for now anyway. The the rest of the site is still in use and gets its steel from other sites.
