Charbonnages de Beringen is one of seven mines in the area. The main coalfields were quite far away and the resources here were not found until 1901. After confirmation that the area was a good source for coal 4950 hectares were allocated to start mining.
In 1907 the Beeringen Coal Company was founded. No that is not a typo and I am unsure as to why the name is different.
Production didn't start properly here until 1923 due to the war, but after this Beringen became one of the largest sources of coal in Belgium.
The mine finally ceased production in October 1989. A large amount of the site still lays in a derelict state which is where these images were taken, some of the site has been repurposed and there is also a museum on the site and a lot of the equipment has been looked after and retained as exhibits.
